First ski day: lessons, passes and meeting points
Val d’Isère has dedicated beginner areas and three free beginner lifts. Start with your lesson, then match its meeting point, pass and equipment. A first-timer does not automatically need a full-area pass on day one.
Is Val d’Isère suitable for a first ski trip?
There are places to learn at village level and higher on the mountain. Savonnette and Village on the central snow front, and Lanches at La Daille, can be used without a ski pass. The tourist office also identifies easier learning areas in Solaise, Bellevarde and Madeleine. Your course and instructor decide the right first session: a free lift does not mean every lesson or later day needs no pass.
- Solaise gondola and Olympique cable car also provide a lift return to the village centre. Ask your instructor which return fits the day rather than assuming you must ski down.
- A concrete course example: ESF Discovery lists 09:30–12:30 mornings, starting Sunday or Monday, with up to eight students. Centre variants include three, five or six mornings; La Daille variants show five or six.
- The course offered depends on the week. Early-season dates can show private lessons only, so use your booked confirmation for the final timetable.

Match the pass to the course
ESF Discovery’s FAQ says beginners do not need a pass at the beginning of the week; the instructor tells the group when to get one as it progresses. Settle any discounted-pass arrangement with ESF before its purchase deadline.
| Situation | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Beginner discount | The discounted Tignes–Val d’Isère 6=7-day pass requires five or six consecutive lesson days. Skiing levels include children’s Beginner, Ourson, Flocon and 1ère Étoile; teens/adults’ first-ski and Class 1. |
| Buying that offer | ESF Centre or La Daille offices; card payment only. Not sold from Tuesday onward. A three-morning course does not meet the lesson-duration condition. |
| Intermediate and above | Tignes–Val d’Isère is required from the first lesson at children’s 2ème Étoile and teens/adults’ Class 2, and above. |
| Young children | Kindergarten needs no pass. Ourson/Flocon purchase timing follows the instructor. Where an under-8 pass is needed, it must be issued; bring the age evidence and photo requested by ESF. |
- The pass is separate from the lesson fee. These are ESF’s rules; another school or course may give different instructions.
- For age-based products, confirm the proof, photo and issue process with the seller.
Find the lesson marker, not just the office
ESF uses Centre and La Daille departure areas. Centre markers vary by activity and age; La Daille separates group-lesson and private-lesson departures. Your confirmation identifies the correct one. Other schools have their own locations, so two people with the same start time may need separate drop-offs.
- Confirm the teaching language for the booked session and use the exact meeting instructions for that course and date.
- Check the finish location before arranging lunch. For children, agree who handles each drop-off and collection, whether lunch is included and where the handover happens.
Fit equipment before the lesson
Treat fitting as its own appointment. If arrival permits, an agreed previous-evening collection removes one task from the morning; otherwise, arrange fitting before the lesson. The shop, lesson marker and accommodation entrance are three separate locations. Rental staff should fit and adjust the equipment.
- Tell the shop the activity and course you booked. Get the school’s full equipment list, including any poles or helmet requirement, and let rental staff handle fitting and adjustments.
- Compare the collection address with the lesson meeting point and allow time for fitting and the journey. Ask the shop for timing guidance.
- If arrival is late or collection cannot fit before the lesson, agree a different collection plan or speak to the school before buying incompatible bookings.
- Keep the collection address and window, booking reference, kit inclusions, adjustment contact and return deadline in your own trip notes.

Two first mornings that work differently
Start with the booked meeting instructions and fitting appointment. These examples use ESF Discovery’s published course choices; they are planning sequences, not confirmed bookings.
- Five mornings in La Daille: discuss the beginner-discount arrangement with ESF before Tuesday, even if a pass is unnecessary initially. Share the actual lesson finish and reunion point with the rest of the group. Adult Discovery lessons do not include lunch.
- Three mornings in Centre: choose a week when the shorter option is offered. Budget lessons, hire and any required lift access separately; do not assume the five/six-day-course pass discount applies. Keep the first afternoon flexible.
- Before leaving the accommodation, have the meeting instructions, fitted kit, any required pass and next handover. If delayed, contact the school instead of trying to find a moving class on the mountain.
